Student Teacher Business Relationship AKA Code Of Ethics
I wanted to bring up a topic that I don’t believe is talked about often or mentioned in the yoga industry. That is the topic of the student teacher working relationship. By doing so I am shining a light in order to bring awareness for those who are unsure of how to go about the conversation whether student or teacher.
The yoga teacher steps into a private session knowing that she/he has entered into a business contract – yoga services in exchange for money. This business contract is no different than one you enter with your CPA, gardener, nanny, plumber, business partner, co-worker… the list goes. However, the expectations of this business agreement seems to get lost in translation, I believe it’s important to discuss.
The need for there to be mutual understanding and respect is necessary in private sessions. Yoga teachers step into clients homes for sessions and this can lead to blurred lines. As with any service that is coming to you, each party has to commit to the aforementioned respect and understanding rule. Since Yoga lends itself to guiding clients on a different lifestyle it can create a level of intimacy, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Placing professional boundaries on both ends is how we each respect our individual limitations, thus helping to create smooth working relationships.
Ultimately, we want to be mindful that we keep the comfortability level for each person. By implementing Respect and Understanding as our guidelines, we uphold and respect each of our time and energy.
The importance is taking into account this energy exchange between you and your professional, whether its a yoga teacher, nanny, housekeeper what have you. Know their scope of practice and keep it professional for you and them equally.
Love Yoga Teachers 😀
